wood turners, like working with green wood. No, it's not green, it is wood that is freshly cut so raw or "green." In fact, for some turners the ultimate in wood turning is fun to cut a tree down and immediately mount a play on the tour. It's like turning in a rainstorm. Some woodturning shops will have a net dyeing sap running on the wall through the ceiling, along the wall and across the floor to turn.
Why is it so much fun to paddle? On the one hand it opens the door to a large number of timber are simply not available on the local timber merchants, and especially not in the dimensions required by most turners. However, most towns and cities have arborists or tree specialists who cut trees for the owners of the house when the tree is unhealthy or has roots that start in the foundation and so on. These trees are often of ornamental plants and species that are not generally available. For the grower, the remains of trees are a cost of landfill. For the wood turner, they look stock. Several times, the arborist will drop the papers off at turners, while other times the turner pick them up. Both parties win and has more landfill space.
However, a turner wood could just leave the papers dry before working with them. But it takes much time and often leads to cracks that newspapers do not apply. Instead, they can be rough turned to about ten percent of the thickness of the newspaper first, then let it dry after sealing the ends so to avoid cracking. For example, a bowl of ten inches would be manhandled to one inch thick, treated and dried. Instead of taking four or five years to dry, it will be ready for the final turn in approximately three months and probably will not crack at all. Many wood turners have fifty or more green bowls waiting to be turned over.
You see, the real reason for turning green wood is simply that it's fun. Shavings come off much cleaner than in the dry wood and tend to be longer and wider. Several times, they can lead directly into the trash. Other times, they accumulate in a mound of satisfying the workshop floor.
The moisture in the wood used to keep the edges and then cool tool sharper longer to circle is not interrupted as often. With the drying of wood moisture leaves the cells of the tree and those cell collapse a little. That's why green wood fibers are a little tighter and is easier to get a smooth, glistening in the wet wood rather than the dry.
It may be an element of mystery in the green wood turning. If a song is put to the finite dimension and left it alone warp and twist. Although some of what may be previously determined by knowledge of the movements of wood so there are still surprises in the results that each tree has individual constraints that affect the movement as it dries.
Then of course there is the beauty of the finished article at the center of everything wood turning efforts. If it turned green there is no waiting period for drying the finished product can be enjoyed immediately.
