Feedsacks were bags and cotton bags that contained all sorts of edible products from sugar and flour to feed the chicken and rice. Initially, the bags were white, but printed with ink on advertising that could (with great effort) to be washed. Feedsacks not were printed with colorful designs that we love so beautiful now until 1920, when the Percy Kent Bag Co introduced printed offering home craftsmen beautiful fabrics, they could recycle in their homes. This clever marketing tactic helped spur sales, which makes this company One of the largest of its kind in the United States.
The trend for recycling these feedsacks lasted during the Depression of the 1930s and the war years 1940s. After the paper and plastic bags began to replace tissue, although these continued to be produced right up to the years 1960, but in much smaller quantities.
These colorful vintage feedsacks were produced so that when the side seam has been undone the resulting usable piece of cloth was a little over one square meter - so three feedsacks were usually enough to make a adult female dress. Once manufacturers realized the popularity of vintage fabric, they competed to provide the most attractive, and therefore the most desirable prints. husbands would be sent to the store with strict orders about which bag to choose - and if his wife wanted a new dress, then it would be necessary to come home with three bags assorted!
Antique feedsacks tissue are sometimes produced in solid colors, those of red, lavender, brown and pastel pink and yellow, if they are increasingly rare. Feedsacks were often printed with floral and other patterns include stripes, dots, animals and geometry. When these old fabrics are reproduced on high quality paper using the most advanced technology they are wonderful flags stamen (at a price much more reasonable than the original antique fabric)!
Feedsacks were made by more than 40 companies and was says there are more than 15,000 existing models. Magazines and corporate model began to understand how this fabric became popular feedsack and they have published models to enable their readers to use the feedsack prints to their best advantage. A 1942 estimate showed that three million women and children of all income levels were wearing dresses feedbag printing. Today we can enjoy these tissues in a new form, like cheesecloth, then follow the great tradition of recycling - although the paper this time - when we're done with them!
