Ancient Greek Art - Sculptures of the Cyclades, Greek Islands
Cycladic sculptures are thousands of years and yet, look strangely modern. A face without facial features, except the nose is not exactly what we think of ancient Greek art. Cycladic art gained prominence during the twentieth century. Unfortunately, this began a period of looting that destroyed the possibility of the sculptures in any kind of place where archaeological context. To date, we know very little about the art of the Cyclades. A measure of its growing importance is the existence of the Cyclades Museum located in the heart of Athens, Greece.
The Greek Cyclades Islands are located south-east and north of Greece Crete in the Aegean Sea. There are over two hundred islands close a circle around the largest island Delos, the birthplace of Apollo, the Greek god of music and the light of Greek mythology and Artemis, the huntress. The name is Greek Cyclades Cyclades, an obvious reference to a circle.
During the period between 3200 and 2000 BC the small Cycladic islands in the Aegean became home to a flourishing culture. The most important job in Cycladic culture was stone-cutting, especially marble sculpture. The abundance of high quality white marble on the islands encouraged its use for creating a wide range of artifacts. Among these, Cycladic Figurines are creating the most distinctive Cycladic style because of the great number in which they appear, and the importance they held for their owners. The majority of women Cycladic figures show, with bare arms crossed on the belly and feet long, sloping bottoms down. We do not know if they were meant to show mortals or deities, but probably symbolized the worship of "Mother Goddess". In this case, the figurines may have been conceived as representations of the Goddess, or companions her. Many figurines have been discovered over the graves Cycladic civilization flourished and became more elaborate burials to take account of the state.
There have been recent discoveries (in the last five years) heaps of broken statues and buried and pottery, as if breaking the statues has been a feature of some ancient ceremony known. This ritual behavior seems to be centered on the island Keros in Cyclades. In addition, deposits hidden shards of pottery and figurines were found on Keros around the islands, many fragments brought there from other places. Why would the Cycladians do? To what end? The mystery of Keros, the Cycladians and deepens their art as Archaeologists sifting through clues to human history and behavior. To date Keros and surrounding islands are home mostly to archaeologists for attempt to explain one of those mysteries of human behavior and the art of man that lead us to a "need to know." Art in all forms, leaves behind a legacy of a civilization history, behavior, values and plot. Fortunately for us, it also provides a beauty only human civilizations can produce.
