In Parts I and II of the Art Deco Ceramics - User Guide for the types and style, "I presented the three different types of pottery and the aesthetic effects to expect when searching for your new favorite piece of art deco.
I will now concentrate on another favorite medium of art deco glass vases. Here's what to look for when shopping:
COLORS
- Ambers, Topaz, blue, green (earthy). Red, or "Ruby" glass often occurs. Cobalt glass Blue is the most coveted. I saw a lot of "smoked glass" as well - a really nice effect!
Shape and texture
- As with the pottery art deco glass vases are geometric, angular, uniform, math, graduated, and concentric designs. I always think Modern and simple, not too developed. In other words, each vase art deco contains only one or two artistic themes that are repeated or reflected throughout the room, and these themes conflict - not complement each other.
- Polished and smooth, high gloss glass is the most popular. However, "cracked" glass seems to be a desired texture and (see more info below).
Artistic elements
- Glass block - glass artisans take cooked (in liquid or gel-like) and the mold using special tools, glassware, by blowing the glass to create a shape, then place the glass block in water for cooling and setting. With different levels and sources of heat, several pieces can be merged, creating models and textures. Some craftsmen Art Deco, even "pinched" glass to ridge inside.
- Acid Etching - a method used by famous makers such as Lalique, Tiffany and Daum (among others). Acid Pickling is to introduce a special type of acid on a surface (metal, glass, etc.) cause a "reaction". This reaction affects everything key, so many artists usually covered parts they wanted to remain in the original color with a wax model. This creates colors different effects of texture and leaves a pattern on the surface of the material.
- Glass "crackling" - an effect created by heating and reheating glass, then roll it into small pieces of "glass frit" and then immerse the entire piece in water to cool. Once completed, the vase seems to have Thousands of tiny cracks, almost like a cobweb.
Art Deco vases accent a smart, clean, modern decor and give life to spaces large and small. Whether glass or ceramic, metal or gold (yes, gold!) The individuality of each vase keeps my research going strong. I am very pleased to continue my exploration!

I look forward to sharing with you my next post, where we will learn how to clean these magnificent works of art without damaging or scratching your prized piece.
Diva Fiore, a budding opera singer from Texas, discovered a special affinity for all things Art Deco -- and specifically, Art Deco Vases -- after acquiring a beautiful glass vase from her beloved grandmother. Diva Fiore aims to explore the drama and significance of these artisan pieces as she begins to expand her own personal collection, and invites you to share in the stories and the search!
