Frequently Asked Questions...
Does anyone know what a porcelain birdcage might be worth or if it is an antique or not?
I found a birdcage made of porcelain in a friend's parent's abandoned house. It is white and has blue floral designs on it tht are handpainted. It definately looks old. I can't find another one like it anywhere online through any search engines. These people were pack-rats beyond belief and have many other antiques. It is beautiful and I think it might be worth something.
Answer:
It is DEFINITELY worth something. Porcelain is primarily from Asia, so there is a good chance it is imported. The fact it is a birdcage is pretty astounding. If it is not chipped at all, than it sounds like it is a very rare and highly collectible piece. It is near certain that it would have to be hand carved. You should get it appraised by a real appraiser. I would love to see a picture of it.

Dresden Porcelain - Why the value?
Dresden porcelain has long been regarded as some of the very best Antique porcelain produced even taking on the might of Meissen. 19th Century Dresden Porcelain is excellent to collect!
From perhaps the first quarter of the 19th Century, Dresden porcelain was produced by Independent porcelain decorating studios in and around the center of Dresden in large quantities. The independent studios that produced this exquisite porcelain were the more sort after firms such as Helena Wolfsohn, Ambrosius Lamb, Donath, Karl Thiem and Richard Klemm. In particular, the work of Richard Klemm rivaled that of Meissen as some of the vases he produced and the decorating style he used imitated the heavy applied floral style to rival that of Meissen. You will quite often find that the base of some of his wares are marked with a Gold leaf which was used to cover the original marks used on the blanks he purchased for decoration.
Helena Wolfsohn was yet another and probably the most recognized and sort after independent decorator operating in Dresden in the 19th century. During the Blitz of WWII when Dresden was levelled by the British, every single factory that produced porcelain was obliterated and even the regular folk of the Dresden lost virtually every piece of Porcelain produced during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Helena Wolfsohn decorated Meissen blanks and used the mark of AR, Augustus Rex or Augustus the Strong, King of Germany. Meissen then took her to court in 1883 to curtail her use of the Meissen mark and from then on, the blue D under a Crown was the mark she used.
Dresden porcelain is without doubt some of the finest in the world and I have been fortunate enough to secure items for my own personal collection. The detail is exquisite and their value is exceptionally high and a great investment.
So be sure to look out for these Dresden decorating firms and secure your own piece of 19th Century Dresden brilliance!
