If you plan to replace your bathroom faucet, I hope this article provides an excellent resource or primer. I wrote so you can select the one that
- That you like and fits the theme of your bathroom
- It flow right for you
The main factors to keep in mind are:
- Price and how much of your budget hobby room bath you can save
- Style - traditional, contemporary or transitional
- Finish - Chrome, SS, BN, ORB, etc.
- Hardware
- and type.
The first thing to learn is the different types of bathroom faucets and how to identify them. This is essential because you may decide that it appeals to you and which one you currently have. You must stay with the same size tap, unless you plan to Change your sink. So here we go
- The single lever / handle Single: These are easily identifiable by the single actuation handle which controls the water flow and temperature. They only need one hole drilled in the sink and can therefore adapt in any sink that has a hole in the center. Some single lever has a 6 "trim plate to cover the hole 4" center set or generalized holes.
- Center Set Faucet: This type of faucet has a spout and handles mounted on a plate 6 inch trim in a neat compact design. It is ideal for small basins that usually come with holes pre-drilled.
- Scope: This is my favorite type of faucet because it gives industrial designers and engineers more flexibility in the design and therefore much more variety for the end user. The hot handle = cold handle and spout are separated parts and once installed, you can see the surface of the sink them. The widespread faucet itself has two varieties as:
- a. Mini: Three separate rooms are fitted into three holes drilled separately. The distance between hot and cold holes the handle is 4 inches
- b. Standard. Same as above except the distance center to center hole is a hot and cold where as 6 to 12 inches (Usually 8 inches). It also allows parts to be arranged in a circular pattern around the shape of the sink.
- Wall mounted: As its name indicates, this valve is hard plumbed into the wall and covered with drywall or preferably a tile backsplash. Often used with vessel sinks and retro style. Our advice ... if you want this type of valve, call a professional plumber to install after selecting the one you want.
- Vessel Faucet: Used with valves and ship easier to install than wall-mounted faucets. They are usually single lever / single hole faucet characterized large beak. Make sure it reaches at least 3 inches above the sink and sticks near the middle of the sink.
- waterfall faucets: These are relatively new type of valve and allow water to cascade into a non-aerated flows. Usually glass, they offer a unique contemporary compare. Make sure they are practical enough for you.
Now you can differentiate between types of valves and can identify the person in your bathroom. Lets read a little about the materials they are made off. They are usually cast in brass, zinc and plastic.
The Brass is probably the most expensive and most durable. If you use the tap for more than 15 years goes to the brass. zinc faucets are the second most expensive and is also much material. It is somewhat more susceptible to corrosion than brass, but should last at least 10-15 years. The truth is once the tap is installed, it is difficult to differentiate between the brass and zinc (the weight of the main difference being). Keep in mind that most reputable manufacturers of faucets have to pass the same rigorous testing for cycle life and also to meet the bylaws of the organization (usually CSA. or CuPc). In addition, a lot of valves are made with zinc handles and a brass body or vice versa to get the price down.
Finally, we have plastic valves. Once again they must also go through rigorous testing and contrary to popular belief are quite durable. Here are my thoughts on sustainability, the metal will be more effective physical constraints to turn on / off valve, but the plastic is much more resistant to corrosion (ie it does not corrode not). With modern plastic valves, it is difficult to differentiate by quality metal finishes, plastic plate with it, the competition is the weight and temperature (Plastic will not be as cold to the touch like metal).
After all is left is too choose the finish (chrome, nickel, stainless brush, bronze, etc.) and style that matches your bathroom. Hope this helps, Happy shopping and renovation!
