Sculpture $21.28 The eye that gathers impressions is no longer the eye that sees a depiction on a surface; it becomes a hand, the ray of light becomes a finger, and the imagination becomes a form of immediate touching. –Johann Gottfried Herder Long recognized as one of the most important eighteenth-century works on aesthetics and the visual arts, Johann Gottfried Herder’s Plastik (Sculpture, 1778) has never before appeared in a complete English translation. In this landmark essay, Herder combines rationalist and empiricist thought with a wide range of sources–from the classics to Norse legend, Shakespeare to the Bible–to illuminate the ways we experience sculpture. Standing on the fault line between classicism and romanticism, Herder draws most of his examples from classical sculpture, while nevertheless insisting on the historicity of art and of the senses themselves. Through a detailed analysis of the differences between painting and sculpture, he develops a powerful critique of the dominance of vision both in the appreciation of art and in our everyday apprehension of the world around us. One of the key articulations of the aesthetics of Sturm und Drang, Sculpture is also important as an anticipation of subsequent developments in art theory. Jason Gaiger’s translation of Sculpture includes an extensive introduction to Herder’s thought, explanatory notes, and illustrations of all the sculptures discussed in the text. |

Phcenician Or Punic Art ? Ruins Of Petra ? Chinese Sculpture ? Art Op Sculpture Among The Persians ? Ruins At Persepolis ? Sculptures At Palmyra ? Baal- Bbc ? Temples At P.sstum ? The Xanthian Marbles ? HinDoo Sculpture ? Temple Of Elephanta ? Buddha Temple At Salsette ? Excavated Temples At Ellora ? Niebuhr’s Opinion Of These Monuments. The few notices scattered over the writings of the ancients, are quite inconclusive as to the common origin of the art of sculpture; although there seems reason to believe, that, if not at first, it was very early employed in the service of religion, as it was found necessary to place before the people the images of their gods, in order to enliven the fervor of their devotions. Religious feeling doubtless had its share in forwarding the progress of the art; for man, even in his rudest state, always has a belief that good and evil emanate from some superior power; and unable to comprehend a divine essence or spirit, has, by degrees, been led to offer his addresses to some visible object as its representative. The family of Noah, as they emerged from the ark, after paying their grateful adorations to the Deity, who had preserved them in order to perpetuate their race, erected an altar of unhewn stones and offered sacrifice thereon. This is one of the most ancient examples of postdiluvian monumental structures on record. Josephus informs us that the children of Seth erected two pillars, the one of brick and the other of stone, on which were engraved the principles of Astronomy. The making of bricks, the building with hewn stones, and the art of sculpture here shown, are proofs of a knowledge of the arts and scienc… |

Calder Sculpture $11.7 To mark the centenary of Alexander Calder’s birth, this volume is the first account of this major twentieth-century artist’s sculptural progression – from his figurative wire sculpture and abstract mobiles and stabiles, to his monumental public works. Images of Calder’s pioneering works of art, along with rarely seen archival photographs of the artist in his studio and installation shots of his public sculpture, illuminate an extraordinary body of work that is marked by innovations which challenge the principles of Modern sculpture. The text by Calder’s grandson adds a unique, biographical component to this tribute to a modern master. |

Sculpture : 1410931617 $15.45 How should I look at a sculpture? Is a crumpled up ball of paper a sculpture? Do all sculptures last a long time? Sculptures are different than other types of art because they are three-dimensional. We can look all around them. We can even touch some sculptures. But what do they all mean? Why do the artists make them? This book will show you some very different kinds of sculptures, from the Ancient Greeks to the very modern. It will also explain what the artists might have been trying to say with their sculptures. |

Excerpt: EGYPTIAN SCULPTURE For convenience, we may think of all the sculpture previous to that of Greece as of one group, distinctly different from it and inferior to it. This early sculpture was the Egyptian and the Oriental, or Eastern. Compared to that of the Greeks, it was rude and lifeless. Yet, if we think of what those primitive sculptors were trying to do, we shall find in their work much to wonder at and admire. CHARACTERISTICS OF EGYPTIAN SCULPTURE. Four thousand years Another Form of Relief called Hoi- before the Christian frm the Egyptians were one of the most highly civilized races in the world. They worshiped the powers of nature, especially the sun, moon, and stars, and certain animals were sacred to them. They believed in the continuance of life after death, and their sculpture was largelyused in connection with the temples to their gods and the tombs of their ancestors. Indeed, it was chiefly to decorate these structures that their sculptures were made. The Egyptians understood a great deal about the human form, although they failed, for the most part, to give it the appearance of life. In an Egyptian museum we are struck by the resemblance of all the figures to each other. This is particularly true of the bodies, for the faces show more variation and many of them are evidently portraits. The statues all face front and they have a fixed Egypture Sculptures. type of face. The rule was that a vertical line drawn through the nose passing through the center of the breast bone and so on down to the ground would be a st… |

Sculpture of the Czech Art Nouveau $83.95 The English version of the major book from Petr Wittlich, which charts the crisis and development of Czech monumental sculpture at the turn of the 19th/20th century and explores the new decorative style associated with the movement known as Secession or Art Nouveau. The author presents and defines the individual and common features of the work of F. Bilek, S. Suchard, L. Saloun, Q. Kocian, J. Maratka, B. Kafka and J. Stursa. The book is abundantly illustrated and is designed for the general reader as well as the specialist. |

Mr. President, And Gentlemen, It is not unknown to you that, by the institution of the Royal Academy, the cultivation and encouragement of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, were proposed to be supported from means derived through the public exhibition of original works in those arts. Schools were formed for their practice, and Lectures appointed for instruction in their principles; but as the study of Sculpture was at that time confined within narrow limits, so the appointment of a Professorship in that art was not required, until thejncreasing taste of the country had given great popularity to the art itself, and native achievements had called on the powers of native Sculpture to celebrate British Heroes and Patriots. The Members of the Royal Academy in this, as in all other public acts, have proved their liberality and patriotism, and it will be no easy task for theperson, called to this situation, to prove himself worthy of the confidence he has been honoured with; it remains with him, however, to exert his best endeavours, in a full reliance for support on the same kindness and indulgence which raised him to an exercise of the duty. INTRODUCTORY LECTURE. Education may be distinguished into theoretical and practical. Theory supplies our minds with the principles of science, from which rules are deduced for our future practice, and, indeed, the latter must be considered as immediately succeeding the former by natural connexion and certain consequence, rather t… |
