Ancient Greek pottery pt 1
The word ceramics comes from "earthen vessel" which means "the Greek word Keramos. The word was applied to a wide range of terracotta products the finest bone China. Crockery and cutlery are just two of the categories often used by stores to describe the use of this range ceramics.
For the selection of dishes informed shopping is mainly based around fashion. In today's world of rapid moving, where casual dining is the norm, our table is often a reflection of our taste in food or the environment in which we use it. For example Mexican food could be served in dishes of brightly decorated with chilies, spices and other vegetables that reflects the type of food we eat can ..
However, the technical characteristics of the dishes are much more difficult to identify. First what type of ceramic, we buy it? Is it clay, earthenware, stoneware, porcelain or china? Often, it just says China on the box, but it means nothing because it is just another term that implies that it is a ceramic! But we already know that!
So how can we identify different types of pottery? One way is to look at the color of the body under the glaze shiny. The best place to do this is under the feet of the question because it often unglazed. To pure whiteness of the following is a generalization of the Color Guide.
Terracotta bright red body color brown-red
Pale brown to buff sandstone color
Ivory white earthenware
Porcelain white to blue white
Bone China creamy pure white
Porcelain and bone can be more easily differentiated from others by their translucence. This means that they let light they pass through the room. If you hold a piece of delicate china or porcelain to light, and place your hand between the plate and the light, you can see the shadow of your hand across the room.
So now we know what type of dishes we buy does that mean? First, it is a guide to the strength of the workpiece and means of resistance to chipping, cracking and breaking. Second, it is a guide to the cost. Manufacturers of high quality porcelain and bone china using highly sophisticated materials and processes "design" whiteness, translucency and strength demanded by consumers. Therefore, the cost is higher. However, because of the inherent strength you can expect this type of pottery to last longer in service!
As in life things are never that simple. Manufacturers of other types tableware (earthenware, stoneware, earthenware and) to compensate for their lack of inherent strength by chunkier pieces. All types of items can be decorated with colors so this is not the differentiating factor. Thus, the buyer has the choice of less chunkier white markings or white designs more difficult!
The chemical resistance to acids and detergents for washing is also considered. Generally higher as dishes from glazing porcelain and stoneware have a higher intrinsic chemical durability and are lead-free, but this is not always marks case.Top now show their tests to BS or FDA, and to indicate their status by marking them with "dishwasher and href =" http://www.pottersfriend.co.uk/p.php?page=13 "> "Unleaded" or "unleaded". The smart buyer should look for these labels in determining value for money.
In summary, shopping for dinnerware can be an enjoyable experience! Armed with a little technical knowledge as it can be so much easier! Give at least equal to the weight to the technical performance of the fashionable design in your choice of ceramic tableware.
